The call of Matsue Kohaku

MatsueKohaku-BluePool

My good friend Mike Snaden of Yume Koi Japan recently sent me this photo from a visit to Matsue Nishikigoi Center in Shimane Prefecture. He had eight kohaku put into a show vat for closer inspection and noticed that these would make for a good teaching session on the characteristics of the Matsue Kohaku brand.

It was over 50 years ago that the brothers’ father, Shoichi Iizuka was intrigued by developments that he had seen in Kohaku bred by a certain “Sensuke” from Budokubo in what is now part of Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. He had first seen these at Miyatora and then later closer to home from a gentleman named Kazumasa Morita (of Morita Sensuke fame) that was an “amateur” but very accomplished breeder who lived in Shimane.

We will be exploring this subject in later posts, based off of old interviews with the original developers of this bloodline with added commentary from myself and Mike. There is plenty of material in existence that will help us track the roots of the Sensuke bloodline and how it has developed and changed over the years. Stay Tuned!

I knew Sensuke was a very different type of kohaku the first time I saw one in the flesh...
